Power Over Speed

For cyclists training seriously, power (measured in watts by a power meter) is far more valuable than speed. Speed is affected by wind, terrain, and drafting; power output directly measures physiological effort. FTP (Functional Threshold Power — the maximum power sustainable for ~60 minutes) is the key metric: trained amateurs achieve 250–350W FTP, while elite cyclists exceed 400W.

FAQs

Calculate cycling variables?

Distance = Speed × Time. Enter two values to get the third. Casual: 12–16 km/h. Fitness: 20–25 km/h. Sportive: 25–30 km/h.

Good average cycling speed?

20–25 km/h for recreational fitness. Speed varies widely with terrain and wind. Power output (watts) is a more reliable training metric.
