Evidence-Based Step Targets

The Lancet meta-analysis (Paluch et al., 2022) analysed 15 studies covering 47,471 adults and found cardiovascular and all-cause mortality benefits continue increasing up to approximately 8,763 steps/day for adults under 60, and 6,000–8,000 steps for adults over 60 — with no statistically significant additional benefit beyond these levels. For weight management and blood sugar control, higher step counts (10,000–12,000) may provide additional metabolic benefit.

Gradual Increase Strategy

If your current step count is well below your target, do not jump immediately to the goal. Research on walking behaviour change suggests increasing by 500–1,000 steps per week reduces injury risk and supports habit formation. Most people underestimate their current step count — wearing a pedometer or using a phone for 3 days before setting a target gives a more accurate baseline.

FAQs

How many steps per day?

7,000–9,000 for adults under 60; 6,000–8,000 for over 60 captures most health benefits (Lancet meta-analysis, 2022). Higher may help with weight or blood sugar goals.

How to increase step count?

Walk short journeys, stairs, lunch walks, phone calls walking. Increase by 500–1,000 steps/week. Walking after meals also reduces post-meal blood glucose spike.
