Four Clinical Formulas Compared
Ideal weight formulas were developed primarily for clinical drug dosing in hospital settings, not as lifestyle targets. The most widely cited are Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), and Miller (1983). Each was derived from different populations and purposes, and they produce meaningfully different results — particularly at extreme heights. The WHO BMI-based range (18.5–24.9 kg/m²) is now the standard reference for population-level healthy weight ranges.
Why These Are Guidelines, Not Targets
Ideal weight formulas cannot account for body composition. A lean, muscular person may be "overweight" by formula standards while carrying very low body fat. Conversely, someone at the "ideal" formula weight may have sarcopenic obesity (low muscle, high fat). Waist circumference, body fat percentage, and metabolic markers give a much more complete picture of health than weight alone.
FAQs
Which formula is most accurate?
No single formula suits everyone. Hamwi/Devine are most used clinically. WHO BMI range (18.5–24.9) is the best population-level reference. None account for muscle mass.
Should I target the middle of my range?
Not necessarily. Focus on body composition and metabolic health markers. Weight is one data point, not the whole picture.
