The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
Published in 1990, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the standard recommendation of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for estimating resting metabolic rate. It accounts for weight, height, age, and sex. Formula: Men: (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) + 5. Women: (10 × weight kg) + (6.25 × height cm) − (5 × age) − 161.
BMR vs TDEE
BMR is calories at complete rest. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) multiplies BMR by an activity factor to estimate actual daily calorie needs — which is what matters for dietary planning. Most people should not eat at or near their BMR, which represents a severe caloric restriction.
