Swimming Pace by Level
| Level | Pace / 100m | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 2:30–3:30 | Learning front crawl |
| Recreational | 1:45–2:30 | Regular pool swimming |
| Club / competitive | 1:10–1:45 | Trained adults |
| Elite open water | 1:00–1:10 | National / international |
Stroke Efficiency
Front crawl (freestyle) is the most efficient competitive stroke — elites use it for all open-water and most pool events. Breaststroke is most common among recreational swimmers but has higher drag and uses more energy for the same distance. Butterfly is the most demanding stroke, with calorie expenditure roughly 40–70% higher than front crawl at equivalent intensity. Backstroke is approximately 10–15% slower than front crawl for most swimmers.
FAQs
How is swimming pace measured?
Time per 100 metres. Recreational: 2:00–2:30/100m. Club swimmers: 1:10–1:30/100m front crawl.
How many calories does swimming burn?
400–700 kcal/hr depending on stroke and intensity. Butterfly is highest (MET 13.8); recreational breaststroke lowest (MET 5.3). Source: Ainsworth et al. (2011).
